I am not a doctor and am not able to dispense medical advice. My husband saw a doctor (many of them) and they were able to do things for him that I could not. However, they were unable to recommend alternative treatments, and in MY OPINION they were VERY beneficial to my husband, so I am providing some of that information here. My husband and I tried all of these alternative therapies at our own risk, and if you try them you will be doing the same. At your own risk. No promises are made in this blog. I am not saying there is a cure for cirrhosis or any other condition. However, I believe most people can get well, like my husband did. My husband is alive, happy, productive, functional and has his energy back. He no longer worries about having to go on disability or getting a $577,000 liver transplant. Cirrhosis is a serious condition. He is currently in the fibrosis stage (Stage 2 liver disease), which is still serious. I cannot guarantee you will have the same results. I just want you to know about what worked well for my husband. I hope you will share what you learned with others, and share your story with us as well. This blog was made for YOU! Thanks for visiting!

YHK - A combination of Chinese Herbal Supplements that help people with Cirrhosis

A really cool gal (I'll call her Stacy : )) whom I met through this blog, who does about as much research as I do (maybe even more), sent me this article tonight, about YHK.

Years ago, about a week after my husband got home from his week-long hospital visit, I was reading about this stuff, and was tempted to try it because it sounded really promising, but I was just researching so much stuff at once, and once we started doing the Berkson Protocol and it worked so well, I never really got around to ordering the YHK (it was on the pricey side... not that it wouldn't have been worth it but we were really tight on $).

Anyway, I had started a blog post about this stuff (way back on New Years day 2014), and never finished it (it really just consisted of the study below, but I'd seen an ad for the stuff). I do personally feel that the detox water is a faster (and cheaper, overall) way to turn things around quickly (not a medical claim, just my opinion based on what I've seen), but I thought it could be worth mentioning this stuff too. People send me a lot of links for different things, and I don't always get around to publishing them, but I think it's worth doing a post about this stuff.  Thanks, Stacy : )

Yo Jyo Hen Shi Ko (YHK) improves transaminases in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): a randomized pilot study.

Abstract

NASH is a common condition with a rising incidence. There is progression to cirrhosis in some cases and the potential for mortality or requirement of liver transplantation. Currently, there is no approved therapy for NASH. The natural compound YHK has both anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic properties, and can lead to improvement in transaminases in viral hepatitis. Improvement in transaminases may correlate with improved histology in NASH and hence may impact on the natural history. We sought to determine the effects of YHK on NASH. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study to determine the effects of YHK on transaminases and on quality of life (QoL) in patients with biopsy-confirmed NASH and a persistently abnormal ALT or AST. Eight patients were randomized to YHK or placebo for 8 weeks. The ALT and AST were measured at baseline and weeks 4, 8, and 12. SF-36 surveys were serially completed. All five patients in the YHK group but none in the placebo group had a marked decrease in ALT at both week 4 and week 8 compared to baseline. After discontinuing YHK the ALT returned toward baseline at week 12. The mean decrease in ALT compared to baseline was significantly greater in the YHK group than in the placebo group at both week 4 (-42.8+/-23.2 vs. -6.3+/-6.7 U/L; P=0.036) and week 8 (-45.4+/-23.4 vs. 6.0+/-24.6 U/L; P=0.036). There was also a nonsignificant decrease in AST in the YHK group compared to placebo. QoL was not affected and no severe adverse events were reported. In this controlled pilot study we found the novel nutraceutical agent YHK to be effective at reducing ALT values in patients with NASH. YHK is well tolerated. Further studies are justified to assess the impact of YHK in the natural history of NASH.

I looked up the ingredients in YHK and it is basically composed of these 4 things:

Panax Pseudoginseng

Eucommia Ulmoides

Licorice Root

Rhizoma Polygonati or polygonatum

These herbs are also available individually on Amazon.com (though I don't know what the correct RATIOS would be).

Understand Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis Treatment
Cirrhosis is known to be irreversible and incurable with modern treatment and medications. But in the history of Chinese Herbs, cirrhosis is in fact curable in the early stages. The treatment of cirrhosis is mainly based on combined treatment. In the early stage of liver cirrhosis, the main treatment methods are herbal treatment and self-maintain which can prevent the further deterioration and prevent further liver damage.
Cirrhosis herbal treatment Yo Jyo Hen Shi Ko (YHK)
Yo Jyo Hen Shi Ko (YHK) is invited in Japan. Although YHK can treatment mutable liver diseases, it is not a type of medication, instead it is a novel Chinese herbal compound. Its’ complex compound and positive effects allows this herbal treatment to gain patents in different countries, including the U.S and Japan. Clinical research and studies shows that YHK can effectively cure live diseases like lowering ALT (GPT) level for hepatitis B, and hepatitis C patients, cure non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and also reverse liver cirrhosis (at the early stages only). Over the years YHK has been tested in many situation, and clinical research have proven its’ positive effects. From one of YHK’s report:
“The natural compound YHK has both anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic properties, and can lead to improvement in transaminases in viral hepatitis. Improvement in transaminases may correlate with improved histology in NASH and hence may impact on the natural history.”
YHK has over 10 different clinical research studies and conferences. Three of YHKs’ researches are onPubMed.gov (US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health). The herbal supplement not only shown to be effective for liver cirrhosis, but also for other liver diseases, including hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This is due to the ingredients of YHK, the natural ingredients allow to liver to enhance its’ function quickly, prevent inflammatory and fibrotic, so that the liver can recover and protect itself.
YHK is especially good for patients who are suffering form both cirrhosis and hepatitis. As medicines can stimulate the growth of liver cells, harming the liver. When patients have both cirrhosis and hepatitis, they should limit their medication intake, and can do just that, stopping liver hepatitis and allowing the liver the recover from cirrhosis.

Other cirrhosis treatment
Apart from YHK herbal treatment, cirrhosis patients must maintain a good diet in order to prevent any further deterioration of cirrhosis. There are a few other Chinese herbs that are known to be good for cirrhosis. Treatment Principles of Cirrhosis are as Below:
  1. Stop drinking alcohol
It is very important for people with cirrhosis to completely abstain from alcohol.

  2. Restrict dietary salt
Salt can increase fluid buildup in the body. Eating a variety of foods every day can help you limit the amount of salt you are getting. It is best to eat fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible and to avoid eating processed foods.

  3. Eat a healthy diet
People with cirrhosis are typically malnourished and require increased calories and nutrients. (Excess protein, however, can trigger hepatic encephalopathy.) They also need to avoid certain foods, such as raw seafood or shellfish, which carry risks of blood poisoning (septicemia). A dietician may help provide you with dietary guidelines.

  4. Reasonable Diet and Nutrition
A reasonable diet and nutrition can benefit the treatment of liver cirrhosis, help the recover of liver function and make liver cirrhosis in a stable condition. Patients with liver cirrhosis should eat foods rich in protein. Enough sugar and proper micro-elements are also necessary. Patients with liver cirrhosis often have the symptoms of lacking vitamins, so we should complement vitamin B1, B2, C, B6, B12, folic acid, and niacin.

  5. Herbs
Some Chinese herbs work well in the improvement of liver function, such as atractylodes, polygonatum, red meddar berry, stringy stonecrop, schisandra fructus, and winter worm summer herb can be used to treat liver cirrhosis.

  6. Actively Prevent Complications
Cirrhosis has lots of complications, which can lead to severe consequence. Generally, combined herbs and Western medicines are advisable. Western medicines are used to take care of the emergency situations, while herbs can play a coordinating role in the treatment of liver cirrhosis. Besides, herbs can reduce the side effects of western medicines and promote clinical effectiveness. Herbs are mainly used in nursing and recovering.

  7. Get vaccinations
Patients with cirrhosis should ask their doctors which vaccinations (such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia) they need.

  8. Liver Transplantation
There is often no satisfactory treatment for end stage cirrhosis patients. The survival rate can increase if the patients have a liver transplantation. It is expected that more and more patients with chronic hepatitis will receive liver transplantation in the future. But whether patients with liver cirrhosis can find the proper liver is another problem.
